TOPEKA (WIBW) -- Topeka city staffers who worked with John Arnold are remembering the former city administrative officer who unexpectedly passed away last Friday. He was 79.

Arnold was seen as an innovator in leading city governments, and he led several of them. Arnold served as the city manager for Minot, North Dakota, Fort Collins, Colorado, and then to Eureka, California before he was hired by the City of Topeka to be its Chief Administrative Officer for 4 years in the late 90s, till 2002.

Open and affable, Arnold had said he enjoyed his working relationships with Mayors and Council members, city employees and Topekans. An alum of Atchison High School, John played basketball, played in the band, and ran track before attending KU. That carried on with his love for playing guitar, drums and piano.. or playing golf and basketball.

Arnold is preceded in death by his wife Kaye, who passed away 12 years ago.
