Fork in the Road: Hometown girl brings farmhouse food to The Farmhouse in Olsburg

From selling meat to serving it, an Olsburg family's old general store got a second life - this time as a destination restaurant.

"So, about six years ago, the store shuts down and (my father) goes, 'I think you can do this. I think this would be really good for you,'" owner Erin Gutsch recalls. "Ever since, it's just been a whirlwind and been building and going."

A hometown girl, Gutsch didn't plan on running a restaurant, but with those words of encouragement from her father, she's now dishing up farm fresh food. She says her love for where she grew up inspired the food she makes as well as the restaurant's name: The Farmhouse.

"Growing up, we lived in a farmhouse and that's, kind of, where the name came from," she explains. "Being in the country, we feed a lot of farmers. I grew up in a farmhouse and just decided that was a good calling point."

Her signature dish is a burger with a twist - the Korv Burger.

"It's something that we make in-house. It's a Swedish potato sausage and it's ground up and we make it into a patty and it's got pork, beef, onions, and spices in it, and you eat it on a bun," Gutsch says, going through the ingredients.

"It's something I don't know that you can find anywhere else," she adds.

Side dishes like hand-cut to order fries can to help fill the plate and, of course, there's made-from-scratch pies to round out the meal.

"She has just good food overall. Period," said one customer, who came over from Blaine to grab a bite. And, it's that kind of reaction that inspired Gutsch to open a second location.

“In November, we opened up our second restaurant over in Riley and we’re really excited to offer a lot of the same Farmhouse items over there that we do in Olsburg," she said.


, at 400 2nd Street, opens at 6 a.m. every Monday through Friday. They call it a day at 1 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday and Thursday, they are still serving through dinner, until 7:30 p.m.; while on Friday, they stay open until 8 p.m.

The hours are a little different at the new one in Riley, at 212 S Broadway St. On Monday and Tuesday, they're open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, they also open at 11 a.m., but will stay open until 9 p.m. On Sunday, they're open from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It's closed on Wednesdays and Thursday.

“I recommend it to anybody that’s got time to take a little jaunt and go, go visit either one of the restaurants,” another satisfied diner, Linda Webber, suggests.
