Fork in the Road: Everything's just like homemade at Whiting Cafe
This week’s “Fork in the Road” takes a turn off Hwy. 75 north of Holton to the Whiting Café.
Owner Rosa Thomas says she serves up dishes you could expect if you came her family dinners.
"That’s the only way we know how to cook," she said.
Rosa says keeping business local is more than a phrase to her.
“It's important. Our towns - our little towns - are dying and you don't want to lose that,” she says. “That's the best life that you wake up in a little town."
Customers agree the small-town feel is what makes Whiting Cafe special.
“Everything here is homemade," said a customer named Dan. "When I go somewhere else, I look for a place like this. You drive off the beaten path, you know, to go find a place like that."
And, when it comes to dessert.
“Oh, the pies are delicious! I just love them,” a loyal customer for years, Shorty, says. “Apple Crisp was my favorite.”
The Whiting Café, at 308 Whiting St., is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday thru Saturday, though they do stay open until 8 p.m. Fridays. The cafe is closed Sundays.
