"I wanted it to be deceiving and I didn't want the outside to look like what's on the inside," owner of The Bread Bowl, Arlyn Koehn said. "I wanted it to be an experience."

The Texas family wanted to bring their southern style to the city of Hiawatha, Kansas to give the city a different taste.

"We've been here 5 years and we have 8 children, 6 girls and 2 boys. It's family run business, my wife makes all the recipes and does all the cooking mainly," Koehn said.

The Bread Bowl is handmade from the building to the food, it's made of the Koehn's family's heritage.

"She made some of them and got some from her mom is where they came from," Koehn explained. "One of the coleslaw recipes came from one of our aunts, so it's all kind of family."

The Bread Bowl has a daily special that many customer enjoy, "there is a lot of customers who come just for the special everyday. They know what day that is and so they come in for it," Koehn emphasized.

Koehn says none of this would of been possible without the support from the customers and the community, "we like our customers, that's what keeps us motivated. They patronize us very well, so we stay busy."

The customers say that they prefer to eat at The Bread Bowl more than anywhere else, but you must arrive early.

"They are very friendly and really nice," customer, Barb Oltjen said. "Its just a real nice place to eat, but you have to get here about 11:15 A.M. in order to get a place to sit, because it fills up really fast."

Barb's favorite thing about the Koehn family is that they treat their customers like family.

"They are glad that you came and very happy to serve you and see you again," Oltjen explained. "Sometimes I'm gone for like 3 weeks, visiting my daughter, and when I come back, they said, Barb where you been, glad to see you again. So it makes you feel real welcomed."
