At least one person was killed when a large fire tore through a Wabaunsee Co. winery Thursday evening.

Wabaunsee Co. Sheriff Rob Hoskins confirmed the death. He said there is an active investigation at the scene.

Firefighters were first called around 6:30 p.m. to Wyldewood Cellars Winery just off the Paxico exit of I-70. At least seven fire departments battled to contain the smoke and flames.

There was reportedly no nearby hydrant, forcing trucks to bring all of the water used to knock down the fire.

A manager at the winery told 13 NEWS the fire started in the front of the building, 32633 Grapevine Rd., adding that much of the smoke was coming from an open attic space that was filled with dry wood.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office said they have also responded to assist fire crews.

Officials have not identified the victim of the fire. They did not say if anyone else was injured.
