No injuries were reported in a Saturday afternoon fire at a Holton sausage plant that forced those inside to evacuate.

Crews responded to reports of a fire at the Banner Creek Johnsonville Sausage Plant just before 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Holton Fire Department, Jackson County EMS, Holton Police Department, and the Jackson Co. Sheriff's Office responded to the scene.

When they arrived, crews evacuated the building and extinguished the fire.

The Holton Fire Department says the fire started as workers were dismantling a disused storage tank.

Residual oils inside the tank caught fire as the tank was cut into, but the fire itself was largely contained within the tank.

Because the tank was located outside the building, the only damage was minor charring of the plant's metal siding.

The fire was put out shortly after firefighters arrived.

A spokesperson for the plant says there were no interruptions to plant operations.
