ALMA, Kan. (WIBW) If you are ever looking for great food, sweet treats, and a place to stay...you will want to visit Alma!
This week we are taking the Fork In the Road to meet a family who took a chance on their already popular bakery business, and expanded it in a fun way.
Jeanette Rohleder has owned Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe for eighteen years, and has the help of her kids to run it. Last year the Rohleder family decided to take on a new business venture, and opened Sweet Dreams Bed & Breakfast, which they now call home.
Jeanette said, "I’ve always wanted to have a bed and breakfast, even before I started the bakery and I thought that would be a good retirement job for me."
She says she bought the 150-year old home in August of 2018, and renovated it with the help of her kids.
Jeanette talked about why she loves running two family businesses, "As the kids grow up and move away, I can get them home when I need help. And they love the idea of both places so it doesn’t take much convincing."
Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe has been a favorite in the community for many years, and customers had high praise for the bakery and Jeanette.
Local high school teacher Brendan Praeger said, "I just really like the quality of the food, I like how quick it is," he continues, "I work at the school, so I’m able to come down here and get lunch in 2 minutes and get back."
Marci Spaw holds many community events and says she has worked closely with Jeanette for almost two years now. "She caters almost every event that we have so I work with her a lot on like custom menus and cookies, because everyone loves what she makes."
Locals are not the only one's stopping by though, people often come off the interstate. Jeanette says she even has regulars from Kansas City, Salina, and all over.
With the addition of her bed and breakfast, she can serve customers in a different aspect.
Another unique part about Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe is that there is no menu. Customers say they like it because they don't ever have to make a decision, they can just come in and get served.
However, Jeanette will post what she is serving each day for lunch on the Alma Bakery & Sweet Shoppe Facebook page.
Everyone that visits says the desserts can't be beat! She offers everything from cookies, to cinnamon rolls, and even scones. Customers can also call ahead to place an order.
The bakery is located at 118 W 3rd St. and its hours are Monday-Wednesday 6:30 am to 2 pm, Thursday-Friday 6:30 am to 3 pm, and Saturday 6:30 am to 12 pm. The bakery is closed on Sunday's.
You can also book a suite at the Sweet Dreams Bed & Breakfast by going on the Airbnb website, or calling the bakery at 785-765-2235.
