JUNCTION CITY, Kan. (WIBW) -- This week fork in the road feature’s Junction City’s Hot Rodz Hillbilly Barbeque. The barbeque house features old fashioned eats and some say it’s better than Kansas City.
Hot Rodz Barbecue is nestled next to a car dealership on N. Washington Street in Junction City, the smell of smoked BBQ grabs the attention of everyone that drives by.
Owner Ron Jackson started this Barbecue joint after retiring from his first career.
“Well this is a nice little venture after construction I decided to go into the barbecue business. This kind of organically grew into a nice little barbecue house. We slow cook our meat for 14 hours, we write our menus on pool table slates held up by mufflers, and we just serve it up the ole fashioned way,” explained Jackson.
Hot Rodz calls themselves a ‘Hillbilly Joint’ because its good home cooked food like you would get at grandma’s house.
Jackson said, “I’d like to think you’ve got to have a little giggle have a little twist so, I said a hillbilly joint because it fits us. Barbecue and hillbilly’s fits hand in hand and it goes along with our hillbilly fortune cookie, it goes with our motif and I don’t think there’s any other hillbilly joints in the area, so we’re unique.”
People travel all the way from Kansas City to get a taste of Hot Rodz—
“I’m from Kansas City and I’ve eaten a lot of bbq and I’ve had a lot of different meats they have on the menu everything’s been consistent everything’s been good,” said patron Donald Green.
The smoked seasoned meats keeps Donald Green coming back for more.
“One of the things I like here especially with the brisket and sausage is that it doesn’t really need as much sauce, the Kansas City barbecue you kind of douse in sauce which I do like, but this has a new homey flavor," said Green.
So make your way Hot Rodz in Junction City---you will leave with a full stomach and smelling like delicious smoked meats.
