TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Secretary of State's Office needed law enforcement's help to find 1,000 rounds of ammunition that disappeared from its stockpile.
Spokesperson Katie Koupal explained while the agency was reviewing its office accounts, they learned the ammunition was purchased in 2017 and went about trying to find out what happened to it.
The FBI reached out to former employees and was able to locate all of it. Over 200 rounds still remained and were returned to the Secretary of State's Office on Thursday morning. They plan to give the ammunition to Capitol Police.
Koupal said they did not want to speculate on why the Secretary of State's Office purchased that many rounds because it happened before current Secretary of State Scott Schwab took office. She did confirm a law enforcement officer who was authorized to carry a gun was employed during the administration of Schwab's predecessor Kris Kobach.
