MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) - Exploring the power of wind, in a fun and supportive environment brought students from across northeast Kansas to Manhattan Thursday.

More than 50 fourth through 12th grade students from eight schools formed the 14 teams competing in the Northeast Regional KidWind Challenge.

“To do hands on projects that will allow them to really understand how to get the energy from the wind, and converted into electrical energy that can be put to work.” KSU Engineering Extension, director of KS Energy Program, David Carter says.

“This is different, it's still science but it's fun and it's hands on and everybody gets a part in it.” Northview Elementary School(Manhattan), 5th Grader, Kentania says.

Teams presented to a panel of judges, and took a quiz testing their wind energy knowledge. They also put their wind turbines to the test in a wind tunnel -- and made smaller turbines on the spot using only materials provided.

”Yeah, it's made it easier to learn about it and it's more fun because it's hands on, I'm personally a tactile learner So I like to get hands on and do it.” Beloit High School, 11th Grader, Sierra says.

While some teams did the project as part of a class, others came from after-school programs. They all agree it’s about more than winning.

”Yeah, it doesn't really matter if you win its just teamwork and how you care about it… its just for fun.” Northview Elementary School(Manhattan), 5th Graders, Eleanor and Kayleigh say.

“In the end we had a lot of fun and we got closer to all our friends” Northview Elementary School(Manhattan), 5th Grader, Kentania says.
