EMPORIA, Kan. (WIBW) -- The Emporia State Hornets ended their season with a 26-20 win over Washburn in the 114th meeting of the second-longest series in NCAA Division II history Saturday in Emporia.
Both teams finished the season 6-5.
The Hornets scored five plays into the game on a Braxton Marstall pass to Justin Brown.
Washburn responded, scoring a six-play, 75-yard drive capped off by Blake Peterson's 12-yard touchdown run.
With the Ichabods leading 10-7, ESU punted and pinned Washburn inside the five. Washburn fumbled in the end zone and recovered it for a safety.
The Hornets used the free kick and scored on a 10-play drive to take a 16-10 lead in the second quarter.
ESU would add another touchdown before Washburn scored in the final 20 seconds of the first half. ESU led 23-17 at halftime.
Both teams added field goals in the second half.
