Downtown Topeka warehouse to undergo major renovations
A downtown Topeka warehouse is undergoing some major changes.
The Kansas Avenue Lofts in downtown Topeka celebrated their grand opening just a few weeks ago. Now, the warehouse building catty-corner to the new apartments will be the next development.
"This is an area that we can grow,” Earl Kemper, CEO and owner of the building, said. “Topeka, Kansas has tremendous potential."
In a few months, the 24,000-square-foot building off Kansas Avenue will be the new home of Bajillion Agency, MotoVike Films, and ActionCOACH Business Coaching.
"We have a business coaching organization, a marketing organization, video, so we're all about growing business and the economy here in Topeka,” Kemper said. “To do that, we set out to grow our own companies, so we had to have space."
Crews began renovations in December.
The final result will be a non-traditional office space for its tenants.
"There's just lots of options where you can take your laptop and sit and work, or sit and have a conversation, and it doesn't feel like an office as much as it feels like a creative space." Andrea Engstrom, president of Bajillion Agency, said.
If everything stays on track, the businesses plan to move into the facility on May 1.
"It's something that people who grew up in this area maybe aren't used to seeing things like this in Topeka,” Josiah Engstrom, Founder and President, MotoVike Films, said. “I think more places like this will hopefully retain some of those younger folks in Topeka because they'll see that there's places that they can see themselves fit in at."
The companies hope the unique design will add to the recent development boom in downtown Topeka.
“Can we help Topeka grow? Can it have more people want to live in Topeka, more employees work in Topeka?” Kemper said. “If we can be a catalyst for that, that would mean everything to us."
