TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is investigating the death of an inmate at the Leavenworth County Jail earlier this week.

According to KBI spokeswoman Melissa Underwood, the woman, who was identified as Krystal Lehman, 31, was found unresponsive in her cell around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

It is common for the KBI to investigate when an inmate dies in custody if the cause of death is unnatural.

Officials say they are awaiting results of the inmate's autopsy to determine a cause.
