Deadly fire at Paxico winery was intentionally set

PAXICO, Kan. (WIBW) -- The deadly fire that destroyed a Wyldewood Cellars Winery Thursday night was intentionally set, the State Fire Marshal’s investigator Wally Roberts says.

They are not seeking any suspects, he added.

Roberts told 13 NEWS the coroner is working to positively identify the person at the scene, noting that they do not believe the individual had any connection to the Wabaunsee Co. business.

The person was found dead outside the burning building.

Roberts would not say whether the individual killed was the same person who set the fire, only that they were continuing to follow up on evidence. He does not believe the business was specifically targeted.

Firefighters from seven departments had been called to the winery, which is just off the Paxico exit of I-70, starting around 6:30 p.m. as flames tore through the structure. A manager at the winery told 13 NEWS the fire started in the front of the building.
