Tour bus with "Dancing with the Stars: Live!" involved in snowy Iowa pileup

(WIBW/KCCI) - Dozens of vehicles wrecked in an snowy Iowa freeway Monday, killing one person and leaving at least five others critically injured, authorities told KCCI-TV.

The wreck happened in I-35 near Ames, Iowa and involved as many as 70 vehicles. Officials with the Story County Sheriff’s Department told KCCI-TV the crash was the worst they’ve ever seen.

Officials said the wrecks were caused, in part, by drivers trying to enter the freeway and crashing into existing accidents.

“Dancing with the Stars: Live! Light Up The Night” posted a statement that one of its tour buses transporting cast and crew was among the vehicles involved in the wreck. The bus was headed to a performance at Stephens Auditorium in Ames.

"All cast and crew members are fine, with some recovering from minor injuries," a statement issued by the show read. "Given this unforeseen accident, and the fact that the safety and health of our cast and crew is of the utmost importance, (Monday's) show at Stephens Auditorium in Ames, IA has been cancelled. To anyone involved in the accident, the entire cast sends their best wishes for a speedy recovery."

Topeka native Hayley Erbert is among the shows casts members, but it was not immediately known whether she was on the bus involved in the wreck.

KCCI-TV reported authorities closed southbound lanes of the highway, but kept northbound lanes open to allow emergency response vehicles to rescue those stranded on the freeway.

"It's a mess. They're trying to get everyone to slow down,” Iowa State Patrol Sgt. Nathan Ludwig said.
