TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay says he’s running for re-election.
He made the announcement Friday afternoon at the Shawnee County Courthouse.
Kagay was elected the youngest D.A. for Shawnee County in 2016 at the age of 33.
In his announcement, he touted his work with a focus on prosecuting homicides and child predator cases.
He said his office also reworked their diversion program and says his goal, if re-elected, is to find creative ways to help those who suffer from mental health issues and that have drug addictions.
“I want to see more progress with the alternative treatment and specialty courts. That’s something we’ve been working on, but it takes a partnership. You have to have buy in from other parties including the court. It’s not something that we can unilaterally create,” said Kagay.
Currently, Kagay is the only one to announce he’s running for the D.A. position.
