Crews fight apartment fire near SW 7th and SW Tyler

An apartment fire that broke out in central Topeka on Saturday has caused the Red Cross to provide assistance for 14 different people.

Fire crews were called to 709 SW Tyler Street just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

When crews arrived they reported heavy smoke and flames coming from the large three-story apartment building.

All occupants self-evacuated out of the 18 apartments within the building, and no one sustained any injuries.

Fire officials say the cause of the blaze is undetermined, pending further investigation, but they do know it began in apartment #10.

The fire caused $40,000 worth of structural damage, and $10,000 in content loss, with four apartments getting the brunt of the damage.

Some smoke detectors were sounding within the structure at the time of the fire.
