Controlled burn north of Silver Lake spreads to building, sparks concern

SILVER LAKE, Kan. (WIBW) - A controlled burn north of Silver Lake sparked concern Friday night.

The Silver Lake Fire Dept. says a property owner was burning brush at NW 62nd and Jennings Rd. They say the fire spread to an old outbuilding.

As the skies darkened around 6 p.m., the sight of the smoke and flames from the large size of the structure sparked calls to report the fire.

Fire crews responded to check on the situation. Even after they left, at least two more calls came in reporting the burn.

The fire continued to burn Friday night, with owners keeping an eye on it.

Area fire crews are reminding people to be extremely cautious with any burning in the recent dry, windy conditions. Fire officials also suggest people check with their local fire departments before burning, to see if any restrictions are in effect.

An earlier version of this story had fire officials saying the property owner intended to burn the structure. Fire officials later contacted 13 NEWS to correct their earlier information, and that the burn of the structure was unintended.
