TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW) --- Campaigns for the August primary election are heating up.
Congressman Roger Marshall announced Monday morning, that his campaign for Kansas' open U.S. Senate seat is being endorsed by former Governor Jeff Colyer and State Representative Barbara Wassinger.
A recent poll showed Marshall trailing former Secretary of State Kris Kobach for the Republican nomination.
Colyer and Wassinger said they believe Marshall is the only candidate who can keep the seat in the Republican column this year.
“He’s the candidate that I’m certain that republicans and all Kansans can get behind for the general election. He’s the best contrast that we have to the democratic kind,” the former Governor said.
A spokesperson for Kobach’s campaign responded to the endorsement.
In their statement, Danedri Herbert said “Colyer’s suggestion a conservative cannot win the general election is disproven by the most recent poll.”
They say it shows Kobach beating another state legislator, Democratic State Senator Barbara Bollier by more than nine points.
Manhattan Mayor Usha Reddi is also running as a Democrat, while Senate President Susan Wagle and businessman Dave Lindstrom are also on the GOP ballot. The primary election is August 4th.
Incumbent Senator Pat Roberts is not seeking re-election.
