TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) Chapman Elementary is closed Thursday after police respond to a nearby mental health/domestic welfare issue.
The Dickinson's Sheriff's Office responded to a residence less than a mile southwest of the school around midnight Thursday on a welfare check. Officials tell 13 NEWS the man had not shown up for work.
“We closed the elementary school out of abundance of caution due to proximity to the police issue...provided that the sheriff’s office can confirm the situation is cleared up we will have school as scheduled tomorrow.” Jerry Hodson, USD 473 superintendent, said.
Responding officers set up barricades on Irish Dr, west of the school, and on Nicholson Rd at 2650 Ave and 1/4 mile to the south.
KHP assisted the Dickinson Sheriff's Office.
Officials say they called off school today due to a large number of children who would have been required to walk by the house in question.
Barricades were lifted and the roads were back open just before noon. Police left the scene a short time later.
