TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Brown Co. Sheriff's Office is warning of scammers trying to get bank information over text messages.

Sheriff John Merchant says he has received several reports of Brown Co. residents receiving text messages stating their bank accounts have been compromised. They are then given a number to call the bank. When the number is called, the resident is told to enter their debit card number.

Sheriff Merchant says most financial institutions will not text you for information and you should never give out your personal information over the phone or through text message.

He also says there have been several variations of the scam.

Residents are also receiving phone call from scammers who say they are from a bank and are concerned about debit card usage. The scammers then ask the Brown Co. residents to verify their debit card information. The callers have been reported to have thick, foreign accents.

Sheriff Merchant says if you have been a victim of one of these scams, notify your bank at once and contact your local law enforcement.
