TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- Dozens of women were decked in red Friday morning, but not for Valentine's Day.
The American Heart Association hosted the second annual Breakfast in Red in Topeka. The event brings awareness to the importance of heart health.
The event included delicious bites, and a keynote from Dr. Ashley Mann of University of Kansas St. Francis campus
One out of three women die from heart disease and stroke every year, and it's important for women to be aware of the signs. One woman who suffered a heart event, Teresa Thomas, shared a lesson she learned.
"I've learned a lot. Don't ignore your body, don't pretend like nothing's wrong, don't tell your husband everything's fine, when it isn't."
Teresa described her heart events as starting with recurring chest pains followed by severe pain in her jaw.
