TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -- A Topeka man was handed a life sentence Thursday for killing a man whose body was found last year at an abandoned campground near Lake Perry.

According to the Jefferson Co. Attorney's Office, Jonathan Blevins will not be eligible for parole for 50 years. Last month, he was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Taylor Sawyer.

Sawyer, at the time, was in a relationship with Sarah Hemmerling, the mother of Blevins' girlfriend, Ashlyn Hemmerling. The younger Hemmerling was set to be arraigned on a first-degree murder charge last month. An obstruction charge against Sarah was dropped.

Sawyer's body was found March 14, 2018, along a closed-off section of the old military trail near Lake Perry. Investigators say the 22-year-old Lawrence man had been shot.
