TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - It was a blast from the past at the Great Overland Station Thursday!
The station hosted a luncheon Thursday afternoon hosted by costumed Harvey Girls who shared their knowledge of Fred Harvey and the historic Harvey Houses.
Harvey was the owner of a chain of restaurants and hotels in the late 1800's. He is known for coming up with the concept of fast food.
"The reason that was is when they got off the train, by the time they got into the diner at the depot the train was ready to leave and they never got their food or they didn't get to finish the food," said Bette Allen, the President of the Great Overland Station. "So he came up with the concept to have the food done, ready and prepared and when they got off the train, they would have their food, eat, and get back on the train."
After the lunch, a guided tour of the station was given. The next Harvey Lunch is in March.
