A well known transgender activist visited Washburn University

TOPEKA, Kan (WIBW) -- A well known transgender activist visited Washburn University Monday afternoon.

Jennicet Gutierrez presented a lecture entitled "Trans Existence as an act of Resistance."

She is known for interrupting former president Obama in 2015 during an LGBTQ Pride event to call attention to the struggles of transgender women in
immigrant detention centers.

Gutierrez said she was grateful to speak with students who are interested in getting involved.

"And just the fact that people are here, that people are leading, and resisting, I think that in itself speaks a lot. And it's an act. It's a revolutionary act, so we have to continue to support each other," Gutierrez said.

Guiterrez is a founding member and community organizer for the national organization Familia: Trans Queer LIberation Movement.
