Fort Riley soldier found dead in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, Kan. (WIBW) -- Authorities are investigating the death of a Big Red One soldier.

According to Fort Riley, Spc. Phillip Cruz-Medellin was found dead Tuesday in Manhattan, Kansas. They did not release any other information surrounding his death.

“We are all greatly saddened by the loss of Spc. Cruz-Medellin,” said Lt. Col. Russell Klauman, commander of the STB. “We are committed to helping Phillip’s family and friends in this difficult time.”

Cruz-Medellin, 21, was a satellite communication systems operator-maintainer, was assigned to the 267th Signal Company, Special Troops Battalion, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade. The Prairie Lea, Texas, native joined the Army in October 2014 and came to Fort Riley a year later, the Army said.

He had been awarded the Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Certificate of Achievement.
