1 killed, 6 injured in explosion at Spanish chemical plant

TARRAGONA, Spain (AP) -- A chemical emergency alert has been activated in northeastern Spain following a large explosion in an industrial zone near the port city of Tarragona.

A tweet by the emergency services for the Catalonia region called the blast a "chemical accident" and advised residents to refrain from going outside as a preventive measure.

The interior minister of Spain’s Catalonia region, Miquel Buch, tweeted that the explosion caused one death and left six people injured while one person remained missing.

800,000 people live in the port city of Tarragona.
