TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) --- Three people were taken to the hospital Monday evening after a vehicle crashed on U.S. 75 in Jackson Co.

According to Sheriff Tim Morse, Rebecca Gilchrist, 19, of Onaga, was heading north on the highway around 6:15 p.m. when the car hit a mattress near the 126th Road interchange. The vehicle then crossed the median and both southbound lanes of Hwy. 75, then struck a utility pole.

Morse says Gilchrist and her two passengers - Michelle Hosler, 21, of Topeka and rear passenger, Vernon Tyrell, of 32, of Topeka - were all taken to the hospital. All three are expected to recover.

Officials shut down one southbound lane while they worked the scene. It re-opened around 8:45 p.m.

The wreck also caused nearly 200 people in southern Jackson Co. around Hoyt to lose power.
