TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) The Shawnee Co. Sheriff's Office has not released the names of the two people killed in a fiery, overnight crash on I-70, but noted the Pontiac Firebird they were in was registered in Tennessee.
The crash happened just before 3:30 a.m. near the West Union Road interchange, in western Shawnee Co. Investigators say the Firebird and a Ford box truck collided in the outside, westbound lane.
Both vehicles went off the highway and the Firebird caught fire. The Sheriff's Office says flames engulfed the car before the either person could escape. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Ford truck was taken to a local hospital and has reportedly evaluated and released.
The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
