LAWRENCE, Kan. (WIBW) -- Of the 18 people injured in the tornado that swept east of Douglas Co. earlier this week, a dozen of them were on storm-chasing tour buses, trying to get a better look at the event.

In a post on their Facebook page, Silver Lining Tours explained they were chasing the Tuesday night storm when a “rain wrapped satellite tornado” formed about two miles away from the main twister. It was that smaller tornado toppled two of the four Silver Lining’s buses.

The Douglas Co. Sheriff’s Office told 13 NEWS deputies responded to the wreck in the 500 block of E550 Road. Twelve people on the buses were reportedly injured and taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Company officials said the other two buses in the group were not affected.

Defending their safety record in the Facebook post, they said that the incident should “serve to ALL chasers as a reminder that it CAN happen to you.”
