TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) During St. Patrick's Day Weekend Topeka has a lot of great events to offer. One of those, is so unique, you might not see it anywhere else.
The 11th annual Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. Great Topeka Bed Race started just like any other race would. Competitors warmed up with music blaring to really get the fun going.
The sunshine and warm temperatures brought out tons of spectators to enjoy all the excitement.
The McGuigan Family said, "Why wouldn't you come to a bed race on St. Patrick's Day weekend? We're here to see the most crazy beds out there."
Marilyn Stanley is the Executive Director of Housing and Credit Counseling and has been part of the event for 11 years. She told 13 News that they started the Great Topeka Bed Race because they wanted a unique event that Topekans could enjoy.
The concept of the race is the teams have to push a bed on wheels down the stretch of the street, one team member has to put on a shirt, then push the bed back to the starting line. Each team is timed and after several rounds, the two fastest race for the championship.
States Construction was back again hoping to win their 3rd title in a row. They said, "This is what we do for fun, we just get together every once in awhile and push a bed on St. Patty's Day."
States Construction clocked a final time of 29 seconds winning the Great Topeka Bed Race and beating their record from last year.
Housing and Credit Counseling Inc. is a local nonprofit and all of the proceeds from the event benefit the community. Winners receive a cash prize but, like States Construction did, most give the money back to benefit the cause.
