TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — An Osage City man was killed in a rollover wreck early Friday afternoon in south Shawnee Co.

The Kansas Highway Patrol identified him as Harold Poertner. They 73-year-old was the only person in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Investigators say Poertner was heading north on US-75, just past 57th Street, when his 2003 Chevrolet Silverado went off the right side of the road and into a ditch. Poertner overcorrected while trying to get the truck back onto the road.

The truck started spinning and slid across the northbound lanes, into the median where it overturned. The truck rolled several times before coming to a rest on the west side of southbound lanes, KHP said.

Poertner was pronounced dead at the scene.

Members of the Shawnee Co. Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol as well as the Shawnee Heights Fire Dept. all responded to the crash. Traffic on southbound US-75 was reduced to a single lane during the investigation.

A member of the family told 13 NEWS a white Yorkie-Poo belonging to Poertner named Molly escaped during the wreck and they have not been able to find her. She added that small dog normally stayed inside and, with the cold temperatures expected to night, they are especially worried.

They believe Molly had on a pick sweater and collar when she ran off. She may have been seen heading toward Forbes Air Base. A number of people searched the area until it became too dark to keep looking.

Anyone who sees her is asked to call 785-836-2320.
