My name is Jared Broyles, and I am co-anchor of 13 News this Morning. I grew up in the tiny town of Panola in Southeast Oklahoma-- attending the same school that my paternal grandparents had, graduating nearly 50 years after them. I received my bachelor's degree from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond (north of OKC); Broadcast Communications with an emphasis in News. From there, I got my first tv job at the CBS affiliate in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I stayed for 9 years, working as a producer, reporter, and later weekend anchor during that time.
One of my most memorable stories includes a young girl with terminal cancer who desperately wanted to meet her biological father. I was privileged to tell her story, and a private investigator who saw the story managed to track her dad down. They had the opportunity to meet before she passed away. I have never forgotten her. Another time, a photographer and I spent 24 straight hours covering a devastating tornado that hit Waldron, Arkansas. The following morning I did a live shot for the national CBS morning newscast having had no sleep.
After marrying my beautiful wife La Manda in 2011, I worked for a couple of years as the director of communications and as a non-traditional teacher for Lavaca Public Schools--a district not far from Fort Smith. TV news has a way of getting into your blood, and I wanted to return to broadcasting. I spent 4 years working as an evening anchor before feeling called to launch Foster the Cause, a ministry that works to recruit, train, and support new Christian foster and adoptive families through local churches here in Northeast Kansas. I have long volunteered and worked as a child advocate--something I am incredibly passionate about. I did that for three years (and continue to serve with the ministry) and was a stay-at-home parent before getting a call about a job opportunity at WIBW 13 News in December 2020. How could I say no to the #1 News Station in Northeast Kansas?
I spent several months working as the digital news content manager for WIBW, managing our website, social media accounts, and OTT desk. When the opportunity arose for a morning co-anchor role, I jumped at the opportunity. I feel like I've come full circle; I started my career wanting to be a morning news anchor! My wife, daughters, and I love Topeka and Northeast Kansas, and I look forward to waking up with our viewers for many years to come.
