TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Shawnee County Crime Stoppers hosted their annual Chili Battle fundraiser on Friday.

Each year, local law enforcement takes part in the competition. Representatives of each team cook their best chili recipes for a chance to win the championship belt.

This year, the judges included Topeka Mayor Spencer Duncan and WIBW News Director Melissa Brunner.

The public was also invited to the event to enjoy a nice bowl of chili.

All of the money raised during the event goes towards the rewards the Crime Stoppers give for tips that lead to arrests in felony cases.

“This program is really important because we solve a lot of cold cases with these anonymous tips that we receive, and just keeping our community safer gives people a safe place to feel like they can report crime and that it will be taken care of,” said Taylor Bugg. We work very closely with law enforcement, but we do work hard to keep those tips anonymous like we say, so people can report those crimes or report tips knowing that it’s going to be safe.”

This year’s winner was the District Attorney’s Office. District Attorney Mike Kagay showed off the championship belt on behalf of his staff member, Shannon.

The event was held in the Lee Arena Dance Studio at Washburn University.
