Traffic stop, foot pursuit leads to 2 arrests Friday

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A traffic stop led to the arrest of two people and the recovery of suspected methamphetamine and multiple firearms on Friday.

The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office reports that a K-9 unit conducted a stop around 1:38 a.m. Friday morning on a Ford SUV near Southeast 13th Street and California Avenue.

The vehicle reportedly came to a stop in the driveway of a residence. Both the driver and passenger fled on foot.

The driver was quickly taken into custody behind residences along Southeast 13th Street. A deputy and his K-9 partner tracked the passenger into a heavily wooded area south of the traffic stop. The passenger was located.

The Sheriff’s Office says that during an investigation, illegal narcotics and three firearms possessed by a prohibited subject were found.

As a result, two individuals were arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Jail:

The driver, Jesus G. Castillo, 33, of Topeka, was arrested in connection with:

  • Distribute opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant
  • Distribute or possess with intent to distribute drug paraphernalia
  • Interference with law enforcement
  • Criminal possession of a weapon by felon
  • Taxation; drugs; no drug tax stamp for marijuana or controlled substance
  • Unlawful to acquire proceeds from drug transaction

Castillo also had a felony warrant for his arrest.

Castillo remains in the Shawnee County Jail at the time of this report under a $50,000 bond.

The passenger, Rafael Gonzalez, 52, of Topeka, was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment and then booked into the Shawnee County Jail.(Shawnee County Jail.)

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the passenger, Rafael Gonzalez, 52, of Topeka, was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. Gonzalez was then booked into jail in connection with:

  • Distribute opiate/opium/narcotic/certain stimulant
  • Interference with law enforcement
  • Use/possess with intent to use drug paraphernalia into human body

Gonzalez was booked into the Shawnee County Jail on Friday on a $25,000 bond but has since been released.

The investigation is still ongoing.
