Enjoy fun for a good cause at Fiesta Topeka
TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The 92nd annual Fiesta Topeka kicked off its summer events Tuesday, with a preview of what was to come. That included getting the audience excited for all the fun things to be done at the festival.
“It’s really a place where the community comes together to belong, to celebrate, to eat, to dance. So, it’s a great event that we look forward to all year, all in support of Holy Family Catholic School,” said Marisol Marcelo, Publicity Chair of Fiesta Topeka.
It’s always important to remember the reason for celebrating.
“The Fiesta’s for a great cause. Anytime that you support education and children, I don’t think there’s a better cause than that, so it’s important to us to make sure that we are very supportive of our school, Holy Family School, and the kids that attend,” said Chris Negrete, the Fiesta Committee Chair.
It takes a village to raise funds for the fiesta, even more so with only one fiesta royalty candidate this time around.
Marcelo said, “Even though she’s the only queen candidate, we need to support her because she stepped up and she said yes. She said, ‘I’m doing this for our community. I’m doing this for Holy Family Catholic School, and I’m doing this for my family.”
Still, the future queen is excited to grow in her role.
“Well, I’ve always just been planning all my life that I was gonna run for queen one day. So, yeah, just something I would have never like, just turn down,” said Milagro Alvarado, the Fiesta Topeka Royalty Candidate. “It gives me more leadership skills in communicating with others and also talking with a lot of people that are coming in. So, I think that’s one of the things I enjoy too.”
The main way to support Alvarado and her cause is to buy food for Fiesta Topeka.
“I encourage everyone to come out and support her and her fundraising events for Holy Family Catholic School. So, we’ll have our delicious tostadas, tamales, anything you can think of,” said Marcelo.
