TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - An early-morning fire Thursday destroyed a garage sent a large amount of smoke over an area just west of downtown Topeka.

The blaze was reported around 8:05 a.m. Thursday at 1245 S.W. Polk. The location was near the southwest corner of S.W. Huntoon and Polk streets.

First-arriving crews found the detached garage fully involved in flames.

Crews spent about 30 minutes putting out the fire, which continued to produce a substantial amount of smoke.

Fire officials at the scene said heat from the fire caused “bubbling” to the exterior of a nearby home.

No injuries were reported.

A Topeka fire investigator was called to the scene. The cause of the blaze late Thursday morning was listed as undetermined. The fire remained under investigation.

The estimated loss was $5,500, including $5,000 to the structure and $500 to its contents.

The investigation was continuing.
