Wreath laying to honor 30th anniversary of Gulf War

FORT RILEY, Kan. (WIBW) - Thirty years ago, American troops were deployed as part of Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield.

In honor of the 30th anniversary, Major General D. A. Sims and Retired Lieutenant General Thomas Rhame placed a wreath in Victory Park on Thursday.

In February of 1991, Coalition Forces undertook a two-pronged assault into Kuwait and Iraq while lead by the 1st Infantry Division, which was under the command of then Major General Thomas Rhame

Twenty-seven 1st Infantry Division soldiers lost their lives during Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield and were honored with tolling of the Victory Bell.

“It is our way of showing our predecessors and their families, that we have not forgotten those who were lost or the meaning of that loss.” 1st Infantry Division Commanding General, Maj. Gen. D.A. Sims says.

“For the mothers and fathers, and other family members, these losses are not small, and they are not insignificant.” 1st Infantry Division’s 50th Commanding General, Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Thomas G. Rhame says.

The wreath was laid in memoriam of:

5th Battalion, 16th Infantry: Melford R. Collins, Robert L. Daugherty Jr., and Mark A. Miller

1st Battalion, 34th Armor: David Q Douthit

2nd Armored Division: James F. Neberman

3rd Battalion, 66th Armor: Tony R. Applegate

1st Battalion, 41st Infantry: David R. Crumbly, Manuel M. Davila, Anthony W. Kidd, David W. Kramer, Jeffery T. Middleton, James C. Murray Jr., and Robert D. Talley.

4th Battalion, 1st Aviation: Tillar P. Donaldson III, John K. Morgan, David G. Plasch, George R. Swartzendruber, Lee A. Belas, Jason C. Carr, Johnathan H. Kamm, Cheryl L. O’Brian, Gary E. Streeter, Steven R. Trautman, and Troy M. Wedgewood.

121st Signal Battalion: Roy T. Damian Jr.

25th Field Artillery: Rueben G. Kirk III

12th Chemical Company: Kenneth J. Perry
