Kansas National Guard loses Airman to military vehicle crash
SALINA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Kansas National Guard has lost an Airman after a military vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon.
The Kansas National Guard says three Air National Guard Airmen assigned to the 184th Wing were in a military vehicle accident on Tuesday afternoon, June 8, at the Smoky Hill Air National Guard Range, 10 miles west of Salina.
According to the National Guard, the Airmen of the 284th Air Support Operations Squadron were training at the Smoky Hill ANG Range when their vehicle overturned which resulted in injuries to all three personnel.
The National Guard said two Airmen were found to be responsive and were taken to a Salina hospital for treatment. However, it said one Airman was found to be unresponsive and had to be medically evacuated via helicopter to a hospital in Wichita. It said he died en route and was taken to a hospital in McPherson.
“Today we lost a member of our family under unfortunate circumstances,” said Col. Jason Knobbe, commander, 184th Wing. “We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones and we extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow Guardsmen. We will continue caring for the injured Airmen and provide assistance to their loved ones. Their health, safety and well-being is our top priority.”
Governor Laura Kelly also released a statement expressing her sympathies to the families of those involved.
“My thoughts are with the Kansas National Guard and 184th Wing after yesterday’s military vehicle accident near Salina. I am hoping the two injured Airmen a speedy recovery, and share my condolences with the family, loved ones, and fellow Guardsmen of the service member who tragically lost his life. His commitment to our state will not be forgotten.”
According to the National Guard, the situation is under investigation and the cause of the accident is still unknown. The 184th Wing is located in Wichita while the 284th Air Suppor Operations Squadron is based out of the Smoky Hill ANG Range.
