No. 5 Washburn wins overtime thriller at No. 1 Northwest Missouri St.
MARYVILLE, Mo. (WIBW) - Washburn’s Tyler Geiman and Jonny Clausing combined for 47 points as the No. 5 Ichabods picked up a road win over the top-ranked Bearcats Thursday night, 84-82.
Up three points with just seconds left on the clock, the No. 5 Ichabods fouled the Bearcats’ Trevor Hudgins on a Hail Mary half-court heave to send Northwest Missouri State to the free throw line with a chance to tie with 0.1 seconds left.
Hudgins knocked down all three free throws to send the game to overtime.
Rathen Carter hit two free throws in OT with 58 seconds to pull the Ichabods ahead. Brett Ballard’s team locked down on defense on the other end to get the stop and hand Northwest Missouri State their first loss of the season.
“The range of emotions that I went through in this game is kind of what sports are all about,” Ballard said. “Just proud of the guts and the toughness that our team showed in overtime, probably more than anything in this game to fight back and find a way to make enough plays. I’m obviously a proud coach.”
The win marks the Ichabods’ first win over a top-ranked team since beating Augustana 86-84 in their 2015 season opener.
Washburn improves to 8-0 on the season. Next, they’ll travel to take on No. 22 Missouri Western on Saturday.
