Tornado Touchdown In Jackson County, Flips RV

The National Weather Service in Topeka confirmed Sunday that damage done to a few homes, trees and power lines was the result of a tornado touchdown. Around 5 Sunday night, the National Weather Service in Topeka received reports of damage in Jackson County, initial reports included a vehicle flipped over along Hwy 75, power lines down, and three homes located three miles south of Mayetta and east of Hwy 75 had siding and roof damage, along with trees down.

Kansas Highway Patrol officials said that a mobile home had been flipped over on County Road 142 and Hwy 75. Two people were heading south on Highway 75 when high winds caused their RV to detach from their vehicle. The RV then flipped, destroying the trailer. No injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service sent a survey team to the area to determine the exact cause of the damage, which they concluded to be the result of a tornado.

The National Weather Service in Topeka has confirmed that an EF-0 tornado touched down south of Mayetta, KS on Sunday, July 4th. According to the NWS, the tornado formed around 4:47pm two and a half miles south of Mayetta. The initial formation led to minor damage to a house at the intersection of Highway 75 and 134 Road. The tornado then crossed Highway 75 where a camper was rolled over.

The tornado then impacted a farmstead just east of Highway 75 and 142 road. Tree branches measuring 6 to 8 inches in diameter were down, as well as several trees. The home sustained shingle damage, and a camper was flipped over. Another farmstead was then struck. A metal barn was destroyed and there was significant tree damage reported. According to the NWS, the resident of this home reported hearing the tornado and seeing flying debris.

The tornado ended at 4:49pm in an alfalfa field near 142 road. Winds are estimated at 80mph. The path length was two miles and at its maximum the tornado was about 75 yards wide.
