TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) -The snow started falling around 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday in the City of Topeka and continued at a moderate to heavy clip through the afternoon and evening hours. At midnight, 8.7 inches of snow was officially measured at Topeka's Billard Airport by the National Weather Service. That 8.7" goes into the record books as the most snow that has ever fallen in Topeka on January 19th.

Many areas in Northeast Kansas did see between 5-10 inches of snowfall. However, there was a sharp drop off in the snowfall totals as you went to the South and West. Emporia only recorded 1.0 inches of snow.

TOPEKA DECLARES SNOW EMERGENCY:
The City of Topeka has declared a Snow Emergency effective at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The parking of vehicles on Emergency Snow Routes is prohibited during a Snow Emergency. No one shall operate a motor vehicle on an Emergency Snow Route in such a manner or condition that the vehicle will become stalled due to the vehicle not being properly equipped with effective tire chains or snow tires. Those parked along an Emergency Snow Route or who become stuck on a snow route without effective tires can be towed.

City crews will work along those routes to plow the snow to make them accessible to motorists

The accumulating snowfall has ended but a few flurries may still be possible Wednesday morning.

Temperatures will be cold during the day on Thursday, in the teens and low 20s with wind chill values in the 0s and 10s all day. We will be even colder on Friday with a morning temperature of zero degrees.
