TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - People in Shawnee County shouldn't be alarmed if they hear an outdoor warning siren sound over the next couple weeks.
Starting Tuesday, Shawnee County Emergency Management is doing FCC-mandated reprogramming to outdoor warning sirens. As each is reprogrammed, it will be sounded for a few seconds to test it.
Emergency Management Director Dave Sterbenz says the process is expected to take at least through the middle of next week, so people can expect to randomly hear a siren at any time. He says staff plan to check batteries on all of the sirens while they go through the reprogramming process.
Sterbenz says testing will not be done on days when it is too cloudy or windy.
