SMITH CENTER, Kan. (WIBW) - Emergency agencies in Smith County are requesting people stay away from an area that saw heavy damage from a tornado Monday night.
Smith County officials say the tornado touched down just after 7:30 pm Monday. Two farmsteads suffered heavy damage, while two more had moderate damage. Heavy power line damage also was reported. Authorities say one person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Emergency agencies ask those not directly involved in the cleanup to avoid a three-mile radius around the intersection of 120 and DD Roads. Authorities say some roads in the area are blocked or closed.
The National Weather Service was in the area Tuesday assessing the damage. Authorities say their initial estimate is that the tornado was an EF3.
