MANHATTAN — Three additional Kansas Capital Area Chapter volunteers have been deployed to Orlando, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Jody Portuese, Crystal Belt, and Virgil Smail, are all Red Cross volunteers in the Manhattan area who will join hundreds of other trained Red Cross workers from across the nation to prepare and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance.
People with friends or family in the path of the storm should encourage them to download a newly-developed Red Cross Hurricane app which puts real-time information on hurricane safety at someone’s fingertips. The Hurricane App can be found in the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for the American Red Cross.
The Red Cross also has two tools to help people stay in touch in times of emergency. In the Red Cross Hurricane App, the one-touch “I’m Safe” button lets someone use social media outlets to let family and friends know they’re okay. The Red Cross Safe and Well website at www.redcross.org/safeandwell is a secure and easy-to-use place where concerned family and friends can search the list of those who have registered themselves as “safe and well.”
People can help those affected by disasters like tropical storms, hurricanes, floods and wildfires, as well as countless crises at home and around the country, by making a donation at www.redcross.org, calling 1-800-RED-CROSS, or texting the word “REDCROSS” to 90999 to make a $10 contribution.
