JOPLIN, Missouri -- The Kansas Division of Emergency Management is coordinating disaster relief assistance to Joplin through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact, an interstate, mutual-aid agreement.

The Johnson County MedACT deployed through EMAC early on May 23 with five ambulances, 10 crew members, a utility vehicle and one supervisor. They have completed their mission and are returning to Kansas.

“Our jobs are saving lives and providing medical assistance. Anytime there’s an emergency or natural disaster we go and assist wherever we are needed, both locally and regionally,” Johnson County Med-Act Chief Ted McFarlane said. “Helping people in times of crisis has no state boundaries. Joplin asked for our assistance, and we quickly responded.”

“We’re always ready to send help to our neighbors whenever it is possible,” said Maj. Gen. (KS) Lee Tafanelli, the adjutant general and director of KDEM. “We know from experience how valuable outside assistance can be when your own resources are being stretched and how uplifting it is to know that people care and are ready to help when you’re in need.”

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office offered assistance to Joplin law enforcement to aid in search and rescue, search and recovery, ad security operations. Six KBI agents from Southeast Kansas deployed along with several police and sheriff’s officers from Southeast Kansas.

“In this time of unspeakable tragedy, all Kansans are keeping our neighbors to the east in our thoughts and prayers,” said Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt. “We will continue to offer what assistance we can as Joplin recovers.”

Missouri is also receiving support directly from several Southeast Kansas counties through separate mutual aid agreements.

KDEM will remain in contact with Missouri Emergency Management officials regarding any further assistance the state may be able to provide through the EMAC agreement.
