Ice, Freezing Rain Create Hazardous Roads for Drivers

Tonight and tomorrow’s snowstorm brings a unique scenario to area drivers as a layer of ice combined with heavy snow will cause roadways to be slippery and difficult to maneuver. Consumers are encouraged to play it safe and postpone trips as appropriate. AAA advises those who must drive on this combination of ice and snow to be prepared and know how to handle these conditions by following these tips:

Before heading out:
* Check highway road conditions and reports and postpone trips as appropriate.
* Clean ice and snow off wipers, windshield and all windows.
* Check fluid levels to make sure engine oil, radiator coolant and windshield washer fluid are filled to the appropriate levels.
* Always carry emergency supplies, such as a AAA car care kit, boots, shovel, blanket, snacks and water.
* Make sure cell phones are charged in case or an emergency.

Tips for driving in icy conditions for this week’s wintry mix:

* Steer clear of slush mounds. Heavier, wet snow forms slush mounds which can pull a car deeper into slush.
* To maintain traction and avoid skidding, use gentle pressure on the accelerator pedal when starting, especially if your vehicle is not equipped with traction-assist technology. If your wheels start to spin, let up on the accelerator until traction returns.
* Minimize brake use on slippery, icy hills. If you need to slow down while going down a hill, put pressure on the brake slowly to avoid losing control.
* Keep windshield wipers clean so drivers can have more visibility while driving. Unlike regular snow, a mix of freezing rain and snow can clog up wipers.
* If you hit a patch of ice, avoid braking. To regain traction, remove your feet from the situation, look where you want to go and steer to get there.
* Increase following distance to 8-10 seconds. Stay safe this week!
