HARTFORD, Kan. (WIBW) - Recent heavy rainfall is blamed for killing fish in the Neosho River.

The dead fish turned up late last week along an eight and a half mile stream of the Neosho River near Hartford.

Ron Kaufman with the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism tells 13 News high river levels, muddy water and an increase in organic debris created a fatal mix for the fish. He says biologists took readings and found the oxygen levels were too low to support fish life.

Kaufman say the organic debris has been flushed away. They aren't sure how many fish were killed. He says the situation isn't unusual following a heavy rain.
