TULUM, Mexico (AP) Hurricane Dean's eye has slammed into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.
The center of the roaring Category 5 hurricane came ashore more than 100 miles south of Cancun, east-northeast of Chetumal.
An emergency official in Chetumal said just before the eye reached land there was ``a lot of noisy wind now with this creature all over us.''
Dean is packing winds near 165 miles per hour.
Cancun is still expected to get destructive winds. Thousands of tourists already have fled the region. And thousands of oil workers have been evacuated from the southern Gulf of Mexico.
Category 5 hurricanes are rare. Only three have hit the U.S. since record-keeping began.
