Topeka, Kan. (AP)--Four northeast Kansas counties have been declared federal emergencies because of flooding in the Missouri River system.
Gov. Sam Brownback's office said in a statement Sunday that he
has been notified that federal emergency declarations have been
issued for Doniphan, Atchison, Leavenworth and Wyandotte Counties
as a result of the recent flooding.
The declaration authorizes federal agencies, including the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), to identify and provide equipment and resources necessary to deal with the scattered flooding on the Kansas side of the Missouri River.
Brownback asked the federal government for supplies for long-term shelter operations in Doniphan and Leavenworth counties to start, and in Wyandotte and Atchison counties if needed.
